At 10:20 a.m., the doctors told Craig his wife was gone — but when he dropped to one knee outside the operating room and whispered, “All I ask is that you let me hug my wife one more time,” the hallway fell silent, the monitors kept screaming, and one overlooked detail on Samantha’s chart was about to turn a delivery-room tragedy into something no one in that hospital could explain.
Part 1
Samantha Klopp’s second pregnancy went exactly as planned. But when she went into labor, she was rushed to the operating room so the doctors could try to save both her and the baby. And when it seemed as though there was no hope left, her husband did something incredible.
Craig and Samantha were ecstatic when they found out they were expecting their second child. They had been trying for at least a year to get pregnant again, and their son, John, had specifically asked for a younger brother. Even though the baby’s gender could have been determined during the ultrasound, Samantha asked the doctor not to tell them.
Instead, the consultant wrote the result on a piece of paper and handed it to Samantha’s friend, who had been put in charge of planning a small gathering for family and friends. Between sweets and a cake, the announcement was finally made. Everyone rejoiced when pink and purple balloons drifted down and stuck to the apartment ceiling, revealing they were having a girl, but no one cried harder than Craig.
The soon-to-be father kissed his wife and son, overwhelmed by the realization that his dream was becoming real. It was heartwarming to see how excited he was for the arrival of his daughter. Then, being a Red Sox fan, he laughed and said,
“I’m going to teach her to play baseball too,”
which made everyone in the room burst out laughing.
Craig and Samantha had met during their college years. Because of his hitting abilities, and because he had been a regional champion at sixteen, he had been admitted to a good university. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury kept him from playing professionally, though he still played for the university team.
He always said that his greatest athletic moment had happened during a practice on campus. Craig had just sent a ball flying into the sky when he noticed Samantha, a beautiful girl he had never seen there before, standing nearby with a friend. Years later, during their wedding vows in front of all their guests, he told her,
“That was the best hit of my life because it brought me you.”
A year later, Samantha’s graduation ceremony was simple and elegant. Craig traded in his bat for a calculator and became an engineer, though he never stopped being a baseball fan. The birth of John became the greatest joy of his life, and by the time the boy was three, he was already in the yard hitting balls with his father.
Craig and Samantha had never expected their son to be as athletic as his dad. They loved tossing balls around the yard together, and Craig loved taking him to Red Sox games. While Samantha carried their daughter, Craig and John would lie beside her in bed and listen to the baby’s kicks and movements.
Everything seemed perfect. But the family’s fate was about to take a dramatic turn.
As the due date approached, Craig and Samantha bought more and more things to make sure the baby would be comfortable. A crib, colorful clothes, toys, and an overflowing supply of diapers filled the nursery. The delivery date was set for ten days later.
Samantha stayed calm because she had done this once before and believed she knew how everything would go. But in the second-to-last week, something unexpected happened. She woke up with what felt like a mild contraction.
Because it did not seem serious, she and Craig went to the hospital without much concern. They simply wanted to make sure everything was fine. But during the doctor’s appointment, the contractions suddenly grew stronger, and then her water broke.
That was when everything began to go wrong. Samantha became dizzy and nauseated, and the contractions ruined the breakfast she had eaten earlier. She had not gone through anything like that during her first delivery, but she assumed it was not a big deal.
Maybe, she thought, their daughter had simply decided to arrive earlier than expected.
She was wrong.
Only a few minutes later, Samantha passed out right in front of the doctor. Craig was terrified. He had never seen his wife like that before, and not even the concentration he had learned as an athlete could have prepared him for it.
“What’s going on?”
“What does she have?”
He kept asking, but the medical team was already rattled by the sudden emergency. Samantha’s heart rate slowed. Her blood pressure dropped to zero. She turned blue and seemed unable to breathe as the doctors and nurses tried desperately to understand what had happened.
Within moments, her body was laid out on a bed and connected to machines that monitored both her condition and the baby still inside her womb. Then the baby’s vital signs began to fall too. A cold shiver ran down Craig’s spine.
He could do nothing except stand there in shock.
At last, the doctors realized they had to move fast and ordered more tests. Samantha had suffered an amniotic fluid embolism, a rare allergic reaction that happens when amniotic fluid enters the mother’s bloodstream. When that occurs, the heart and lungs can stop functioning.
She was moved to another section of the maternity ward, closer to the operating room. The nurses would not let Craig go in. He insisted that he needed to be with his wife and daughter, but they warned him that the situation was critical and the doctors needed to concentrate because Samantha might not survive.
And if she did survive, they told him, she might never be the same.
When Craig heard those words, it felt as if the weight of the world had dropped onto his shoulders. Out in the maternity ward hallway, he wanted to punch the walls until his fists split open. Instead, he dropped to his knees, pressed his head against the wall, and used every ounce of strength he had just to whisper to himself.
No one who saw him could tell whether he was praying or simply hoping against hope. But the sight of him was terrifying. Craig needed to stay strong, because he was about to face one of the most painful losses of his life.
Part 2
Inside the operating room, Samantha’s condition kept getting worse, and nothing the medical team did could stop the worst from happening. At 10:20 that morning, Samantha was declared dead.
As horrifying as it was for everyone, there was no time to grieve. The team was still fighting to save the baby. Craig, meanwhile, paced back and forth outside, barely able to hold himself together.
The two of them had spent months preparing for this child’s arrival. They had imagined what life as a family of four would look like, dreamed about the baby’s face, and talked about the future. They had not even chosen a name yet. They wanted to look at their daughter first and name her after seeing her.
And now Craig was standing there alone, trying to comprehend the thought of saying goodbye to the woman he had met by chance ten years earlier at a baseball practice. He was terrified and helpless, utterly unprepared for anything like this. Even so, he tried not to lose control, because his daughter was still fighting, and he would not give up if there was even a one-percent chance that the story could turn around.
But he also could not let his wife go without a fight.
So Craig took on the challenge in the only way he knew how. He got down on one knee and asked the most painful and honest question of his life.
“I know this is more than I can take, and maybe it’s more than I can ask. Maybe that means there’s a plan and a reason for all of this. That’s what I’m going to believe.”
Then, from the hallway floor, he made one last plea.
“All I ask is that you let me hug my wife one more time.”
He was shattered. After that, he got to his feet and started calling family and friends, begging them to come to the maternity ward as quickly as they could. Once everyone had arrived in the waiting room, they stood together holding hands.
They repeated their prayers and their hopes for Samantha and the baby. Their pleas spread across social media, and before long, even people who had never met Samantha or Craig were sending their support and praying for the family. Afterward, everyone gathered in one corner and waited for better news.
Samantha was still in the operating room. The doctors were making one final, desperate attempt to resuscitate her.
At least one miracle happened.
The baby girl was saved by the neonatal team. She entered the world crying, and more importantly, she had been separated from her mother in time to live. Even with that victory, though, no one knew whether the newborn would be able to feel her mother’s comfort on the first day of her life.
Craig laughed and cried at the same time as he held his daughter in his arms. The feeling was impossible to describe, beautiful and devastating all at once. He had heard people talk about those surreal moments that scramble the mind and the senses, but only then did he truly understand how hard they were to explain.
And within just a few minutes of looking at her, he knew exactly what her name would be. Grace. That was what she would be called.
Craig was grateful to have Grace, but the possibility of losing Samantha cast a shadow over every bit of joy he felt. Then fate seemed to reward the former athlete’s stubborn hope. A doctor told him that Samantha had responded to the latest resuscitation attempt.
Her pulse was still weak, but she was breathing again.
No one understood how it had happened, but the doctor said they would do everything possible to stabilize her. Craig threw his arms around his family and friends. When he heard those words, it felt as though a crushing burden had finally been lifted from his chest.
Samantha was transferred to the ICU, where the doctors fought to keep her breathing. But after a short while, her vital signs began to crash again. Then Samantha’s brother, who was a surgeon, arrived at the hospital and asked to see her medical records.
He already knew it was a bad sign. The risks were severe. Still, in looking over everything, he learned that his sister was having a heart attack.
He went into the waiting room and told everyone.
It was a bleak and terrifying moment.
Craig rose to his feet, looked at his newborn daughter, and decided to go see his wife in the ICU. While doctors and nurses reviewed charts, watched the monitors, and administered medication, the engineer stepped up to Samantha’s bedside and took her hand.
“I will always love you. Grace is already with me, and she is beautiful and perfect. Please fight if you still have any strength left.”
Craig wanted to believe with all his heart that Samantha would improve. But she did not. Even after two blood transfusions, her condition remained critical.
Her heart was failing, and less and less blood was moving through her body. Eventually, her lungs stopped working too, and she had to depend on machines to breathe for her. Samantha lay unconscious, completely unresponsive.
She could have died at any moment. But then one of the doctors saw something that no one had noticed before.
While reviewing one of the exams and reassessing her condition, he realized that one of her organs had been accidentally cut and was still bleeding, all without anyone having recognized it. So just as Samantha was about to be declared dead for the second time, she was rushed into another operating room at a different hospital.
That building was better equipped for her condition. It had an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine—an ECMO machine—which could restore the work of the heart and lungs.
Part 3
The doctors also lowered Samantha’s sedation until she woke up so they could evaluate how well her nervous system was functioning. Craig walked back into the room, and when Samantha opened her eyes, he was right there in her line of sight.
“Hi, my love,”
he said, taking her hand.
Despite her confusion and the disappointment clouding her face, Samantha managed to smile back. The doctors had never expected such a response after everything her body had endured. Not only was her brain alive, but her nervous system was functioning better than anyone had dared to hope.
In that moment, Craig understood that there might still be a way to save her for good.
The doctors then told Samantha they were going to try one more surgery on her, and that the anesthesia would soon put her back to sleep. Craig came running in with Grace and, for the first time, laid the newborn in Samantha’s lap so the mother could touch her daughter for the very first time.
“My love, her name is Grace. Our daughter is here, and she’s healthy. We’ll be waiting for you when you wake up.”
Craig’s voice caught with emotion as he said it.
Samantha was weak, but something in her face changed instantly. The look in her eyes shifted in a powerful way, as if seeing and feeling her daughter had awakened something deep inside her and returned a piece of her strength. Samantha became determined to fight for her life.
As soon as the anesthesiologist gave her the medication, she drifted back to sleep.
There was nothing Craig could do after that except care for Grace and wait. John was still at his grandparents’ house, unaware that his mother had been so close to death. The entire ordeal became the greatest test of faith and endurance that Craig, along with many of their relatives and friends, had ever faced.
At last, the surgery ended, and Samantha’s condition was miraculously stabilized. By then the doctors were exhausted, stunned, and almost unable to make sense of what they had witnessed.
How could one woman’s body pass through death and the birth of life in the same day?
Craig wept with relief. He could barely tell his parents the good news over the phone because his whole body was still shaking. But now they could finally come to the maternity ward, meet Grace, and bring John with them.
Twenty-four hours later, Samantha was able to breathe on her own again after the ventilator was removed. After several more hours of waiting, Craig, John, and little Grace were finally allowed to see her together. Samantha had clearly been through something terrible, and she remembered very little of it.
Even with her strength gone and her head heavy, she still wanted to hold her daughter one more time. Craig gently placed the baby in her lap.
Samantha’s eyes filled with tears as Grace opened her own eyes and looked at her mother for the first time. Craig sat beside his wife and quietly thanked God.
