Efter att jag slutade mitt jobb satsade jag 12 år av besparingar på att köpa mitt drömstrandhus på Sullivans Island så att jag kunde läka, och den allra första natten ringde min styvmor nära midnatt och sa: “Vi flyttar in imorgon, mästaren är vår, och om du inte kan hantera det, gå någon annanstans,” och jag stod bara där frusen i ljudet av vågorna, log sedan på ett sätt som kändes kallt även för mig

Grundskolan ringde mig nära 19.00. “Din dotter har fortfarande inte hämtats. Det har gått 3 timmar.” Jag sa att jag bara var 28, singel, bodde ensam i Portland och aldrig hade fått ett barn, men de sa kallt, “Om du inte kommer just nu, ringer vi polisen för vanvård av barn.” Jag körde genom regnet bara för att bevisa att de hade fel person — och sedan såg den lilla flickan i slutet av korridoren upp som om någon hade väntat på det ögonblicket väldigt länge.

Go to a shelter.” She slammed the door in my face, I called the troubled boy I took in when he was 16—and a military convoy showed up like they had picked exactly the wrong person to provoke.
